What You Should Know Before It Happens to Someone.
The numbers you can count. The ones you cannot. And the moment you decide to look out for each other.
Berlin Drink Spiking Numbers, and What They Do Not Show
In 2025, Berlin police registered 74 cases involving K.-o.-Tropfen, the German term for drink-spiking substances. In 2024, the number was 59. In 2023, 61. Ten years ago, the picture looked different: in 2013, only 13 incidents were officially recorded, the year after that just four.
These are the numbers in the visible part of the statistic. The ones that were reported, taken down, documented. The number of unreported cases is another story.
Benjamin Jendro, press spokesperson for the Berlin police union Gewerkschaft der Polizei, is quoted on rbb24 with a sentence that says almost everything about the shape of this problem:
"In view of the understandable feelings of shame on the part of those affected, and the fact that poisoning by drink-spiking substances is not always clearly recognisable to them, one should be under no illusions. The unreported figures will be, in his words, gigantic."
Police hotspots: Mitte, Charlottenburg, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. But this is a citywide problem, not a local one. Federal figures from a Bundeskriminalamt dark-field study cited across national reporting place around five percent of the population, more women than men, as believing they have been given K.-o.-Tropfen at least once in their life.
What Drink Spiking Substances Actually Are
It is not a single substance. It is an umbrella term for substances that incapacitate, render helpless, or knock unconscious.
These include ketamine, Rohypnol, diazepam, and gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), known as Liquid Ecstasy. GHB is especially common because it is colourless and odourless. It can taste slightly salty or soapy. Sometimes it tastes of nothing at all. National reporting also names GBL (Gamma-Butyrolacton) and BDO (1,4-Butandiol) as chemical precursors sometimes used as drink-spiking substances themselves; both are legally sold as cleaning solvents but their use against people is criminal.
The effect sets in after about 15 to 30 minutes: sedation, memory gaps, loss of control. At higher doses, unconsciousness. The effect can last several hours.
Waking up: disorientation, nausea, headaches. The feeling that something is wrong, without knowing what. Hours of your life simply missing. Some people only realise days later that something happened.
Why So Few Perpetrators Are Convicted
According to the Berlin police, many of these substances break down quickly in the body and are only detectable for six to twelve hours. After that: no trace. No evidence. Almost no convictions.
This is not coincidence. This is design.
On top of that comes the shame of those affected. The question of whether you simply drank too much. Whether you did something wrong yourself. The answer is no. Responsibility always lies with the perpetrator. But the doubt delays the trip to the hospital, and those lost hours are often decisive.
In the same rbb24 segment, Jendro is clear: the substances are used to prepare a serious sexual offense, which in the overwhelming majority of cases is committed by men.
Drink Spiking Berlin Club Prevention: What Actually Helps
These tips never make an attack the fault of the victim. The responsibility lies with whoever puts something in someone's glass. But knowledge is a layer of protection.
Keep your glass in sight. Do not leave it unattended while dancing, do not leave it on the table on your way to the bathroom. A short moment is enough.
Drink-spike test strips can detect some substances, including GHB. They are available online and in some pharmacies. One drop, wait a moment. They are not a guarantee, but a first line of defence.
Only take what was in your own hand. Drinks you did not order yourself. Drinks that someone else briefly held for you. Open bottles you did not open yourself. No thank you, with no explanation needed.
The buddy system. Someone knows where you are. Someone knows your plan. Someone notices if you suddenly seem different.
Trust your body immediately. If something feels off, if you feel more intoxicated than you should, if you become dizzy, if your legs go soft: tell the awareness or security staff, the bartender, or your friend straight away. Do not wait. Do not apologise.
What to Do If You Suspect Something Happened
Act immediately. Not tomorrow.
Do not go alone. Call someone. Do not leave the venue without company.
Call the emergency services: 112. This is a medical emergency.
Go to the emergency room. Within six hours, blood and urine can often still be tested. The longer you wait, the harder detection becomes.
Do not shower first if a sexual assault might also have occurred. Traces on the body can be important for a later examination.
File a police report or do not: that is your decision. But still see a doctor. For yourself.

What Is Changing in Law
On 13 May 2026, the German federal cabinet approved a draft law put forward by Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig. The use of K.-o.-Tropfen in robbery and sexual offenses is to be classified as a dangerous means, comparable to the use of a weapon or dangerous instrument. Minimum sentence: five years in prison, up from three.
The change addresses a Bundesgerichtshof ruling from October 2024, according to which K.-o.-Tropfen were legally not to be understood as a dangerous instrument in the sense of the Strafgesetzbuch. That gap is what the new draft closes: paragraphs 177 (sexual offense, sexual coercion and rape) and 250 (aggravated robbery) are set to be amended so that K.-o.-Tropfen and other dangerous means are explicitly covered.
The draft still has to pass the Bundestag and the Bundesrat. It is not yet law.
In parallel, a Neue-psychoaktive-Stoffe-Gesetz has restricted the supply, purchase, and possession of certain substances used to manufacture drink-spiking drugs; sale of GBL and BDO to end consumers for consumption has been prohibited since April 2026.
But no law protects you in the moment when someone reaches for your glass. So: look out for each other. Talk about it. Even the morning after.
