Exactly fifteen years after its first truck rolled through the Transgenialer CSD in Kreuzberg, MASH-UP Multigender/Multiworld looks back on a history that started with a small, joy-charged sound system and a big, very specific intention.
In a queer Berlin that was far less multicultural than today, the truck gathered Global South queers around Brazilian funk anthems like "Solange, Tô Aberta", techno, house and indie, turning a parade slot into a moving dance floor of self-confidence and pleasure.
That truck did not stay a one-off. It became the seed of a long-running BIPoC queer-feminist project.
What are we fighting for
From the beginning, the project chose to ask "What are we fighting for?" instead of only "What are we fighting against?", centring self-determination, openness, plurality and the agency of women, BIPoC, trans and non-binary people.
The dance floor was framed as a space of resistance and transformation. Being seen, heard and represented was not treated as a side effect of partying. It was the core of why the music played at all.
A first Global-South-focused space in Berlin's queer scene
Over these fifteen years, MASH-UP helped carve out one of the first explicitly Global-South-focused spaces in Berlin's queer scene, building bridges between migrant communities, local activism and club culture.
What started as a truck at an alternative CSD has grown into an established node in the city's queer-feminist BIPoC ecosystem. Nights that combine live performance, bass-heavy club sets and political storytelling.
The through-line is consistent: sound systems that sound like the city actually does, not like the marketing version of it.
Fifteen years, ten years, one night
On Friday, 2 October, the collective will mark fifteen years of MASH-UP and ten years of the party series with a large-scale anniversary event at SO36 in Kreuzberg.
The evening promises a packed line-up of amazing acts and surprises still to be revealed, turning one of Berlin's classic leftist music venues into a focused celebration of queer migrant presence and shared history.
"If you've been there, you know. If you haven't, now's the time." The invitation insists that fifteen years is not fifteen days, that continuity matters, and that the dance floor can hold memory as well as sweat.
