The Pornfilmfestival Berlin is the annual reminder that pornography is not just click numbers, but a cultural technique with its own aesthetics, politics and body histories.
Since 2006, the Pornfilmfestival Berlin has been quietly doing something radical: treating porn as cinema and cinema as a place to argue about sex in public. Independent, non-commercial and run without public funding, it centres sexuality, politics, feminism, gender diversity, post-porn and body politics in one concentrated week each October.
What started as the first festival of its kind in Germany has grown into a reference point for similar events around the world. You can feel that history in the audience line outside Moviemento: film nerds, sex workers, activists, kinksters, queers, curious neighbours, all waiting for a ticket to the same dark room.
What the Pornfilmfestival shows
Each edition screens around 25 to 30 feature-length films and about 100 shorts, arranged into curated blocks. Themes range from sexual ethics to identity, body norms, global moral codes and experimental approaches to porn as an art form.
You might watch a hardcore film that treats consent negotiation like a choreography, a documentary about sex work laws, a trans coming-of-age story, a no-budget post-porn manifesto or a meticulously shot BDSM scene that could hang in a gallery frame by frame.
The programming does not chase clickbait shock. It is more interested in what happens when desire, power, fantasy and vulnerability are allowed to be complicated on screen.
Audience and atmosphere at the PFFB
The festival reaches roughly 8.000 visitors each year, with slightly more than half identifying as women. The crowd is a mix of hetero, homo, bi, trans, non-binary and queer spectators, and almost half of them travel in from outside Germany.
That mix changes the mood in the cinema. Instead of the stereotypical male gaze porn audience, you get a room where laughter, discomfort, arousal and critique sit right next to each other, across genders and generations.
In the lobby and on the pavement outside, conversations continue long after the credits: about sex work, censorship, representation, trauma, pleasure and all the unglamorous logistics of making explicit film ethically.
Beyond the screen of the Pornfilmfestival Berlin
PFFB is as much a discourse space as a film festival. The programme regularly includes panel discussions, lectures, readings, workshops, performances and live presentations about sexuality today.
Here, directors talk about working with intimacy coordinators, performers discuss labour conditions, theorists unpack porn tropes and activists argue over strategy. The point is not to agree, but to share a space where porn is allowed to be complex instead of a guilty secret.
Many later porn and sex themed festivals cite Berlin's Pornfilmfestival as a starting reference or inspiration. The network that has grown around it proves how hungry people still are for empowered, shame-critical ways of dealing with sex and sex work.
Who runs it and where it lives
The festival was founded by filmmaker and producer Jürgen Brüning, with the explicit aim of rethinking the porn genre artistically, socially and philosophically. Today it is organised on a voluntary basis by an international six-person team of filmmakers, film theorists, producers and journalists based in Berlin.
PFFB usually takes place in the last week of October at Moviemento on Kottbusser Damm, one of the oldest cinemas in Germany, and at Babylon Kreuzberg. Both venues are small enough that you keep running into the same faces all week, which turns the festival into a temporary community as much as an event.
There is an important accessibility note: Moviemento does not have a fully wheelchair-accessible entrance, while some events at Babylon Kreuzberg are barrier-free. The team communicates these limits clearly, even as they continue to nudge local infrastructure.
A summer outpost: Hot Short Film Night
PFFB does not vanish completely between Octobers. The festival takes over the open-air screen at Kino Central for A Hot Short Film Night in the courtyard of Haus Schwarzenberg.
Under the summer sky, they screen a curated selection of provocative, artistic and boundary-pushing short films, subtitled or in English, like the rest of the open-air season.
Tickets run via Kino Central's usual pre-sale channels. It is a lighter, one-night distillation of the bigger festival: less dense, more atmospheric, but with the same commitment to treating explicit images as material for thought, pleasure and conversation.
Why it belongs on the Berlin Kink Calendar
The Berlin Kink Calendar is not only about where bodies meet in play spaces. It is also about where those bodies are thought about, represented and argued over.
Pornfilmfestival Berlin is one of the rare places where kink, queerness, sex work and cinema sit at the same table and are taken seriously.
